Weekly Update - September 28th

I can't believe next week is the start of October already! The time is flying by in second grade!

Next week we will be working on the following topics: 
ELAWe will learn about visualizing and story structure, along with singular and plural nouns. We will work on spelling consonant blends with r, l, and s. For writing we will introduce what good writers do, focusing on satisfying endings. We will continue our current Roald Dahl book, George's Marvelous Medicine, that ties right into our science unit on matter.   

Math: We will continue spiraling through our Saxon math, focusing specifically on adding 2's, creating patterns, identifying weekdays and weekend days, pictographs, and identifying polygons.    

Science: We will continue in our matter unit, focusing on liquids, dissolving, changing states of matter, and solutions/mixtures. 


International: Your child's homework this week, along with Study Island, is to research and come up with a traditional German outfit to wear to our Oktoberfest celebration on Thursday, October 11th.

Weekly Update - September 21st

Happy World Peace Day and Half-Day Friday! :-)

Next week we will be working on the following topics: 
ELAWe will learn about cause and effect, summarizing, and using context clues. We will work on spelling long vowels o, u, and e as well as sounds for g. For writing we will introduce what good writers do, focusing on detailed middles. We will begin a new Roald Dahl book, George's Marvelous Medicine, that ties right into our science unit.   

Math: We will continue spiraling through our Saxon math, focusing specifically on acting out some some went away stories, elapsed time, odd/even numbers, and ordinal position to 12th.   

Science: We will begin to study science for the remainder of the quarter. Over the next few weeks we will study matter, 
reviewing solids, liquids, and gases this week.  

Did You Know? Zero Waste lunch is the last Tuesday of every month. This is coming up this Tuesday, Sept. 25th!

Notes from the Principal: 
Mint Hill Madness: September 28-29th
Mint Hill is having a festival.  The Staley family is giving all of their proceeds to CIS and our new school building fund.  If you would like to support our new school building and the Staley family, please purchase a raffle ticket or volunteer.  You could win a new Kindle Fire, Nest Thermostat, or a new AC unit!!!  Tickets range from $5.00-$15.00.  If you would like to purchase some tickets, please email Kim Hoyle athoylek@ciscomets.com.  Staff will be selling tickets on Monday morning in the middle of upper lot and gravel.  Student council will also be selling tickets in the afternoons between 3:00-3:30.  If you have time to volunteer on Friday or Saturday, please see Kim Hoyle for times.  Please help us build a new school.

Gravel Lot Lottery:  We are opening up the gravel lot to any family!  Your family does not need to have a minimum number of students in your carpool.  Tickets will start at $50.00 per ticket.  We are only adding a limited number of spaces, so get your ticket today.  Please stop by the office and see Cathie Elliott. All proceeds will go towards the new school building fund.

Fridays: On Fridays, the teachers have spirit day.  They are allowed to wear jeans and a CIS shirt.  Students are ONLY allowed to wear jeans on the first Friday of the month for casual day. 

Family Friend Initiative:  We are working with UNCC, Jill Morin, to help host International students.  UNCC needs families who are willing to spend time with the International students on the weekends or weekdays if you have time.  They do not live with you, they just spend time with your family.  If you are interested, please email Trish Valentino at valntinot@ciscoemts.com.  Thank you for your help. 

Parking in Lower Lot:   Please park as close as you can to the other cars when on campus.  We need all the space we can get to park.  After 3:30pm, parents are not allowed to park in the lower lot and then walk to pick up their child.  Please either stay in the line or enter the gravel lot lottery.  It is not fair to other families if you skip the procedures already in place. Thank you.

Weekly News - September 14th

Next week we will be working on the following topics: 
ELAWe will learn about author's purpose, making connections with texts, and complete sentences (statements/questions). We will work on spelling long vowels a and i and multiple-meaning words as well. For writing we will introduce what good writers do, focusing on good beginnings. We will continue our Roald Dahl book, The Magic Finger 

Math: We will continue spiraling through our Saxon math, focusing specifically on some some more, comparing and ordering objects, the commutative property, and pattern block designs. We will take our first Saxon assessment this Thursday. 

Social Studies: We will continue our unit on citizenship and communities. This week we will focus on creating a community map by collaborating in small groups.  

Did You Know? Zero Waste lunch is the last Tuesday of every month. This is coming up quickly on Sept. 25th!

Weekly News - September 7th

This week has just flown by! I hope everyone has a great weekend! 

Next week we will be working on the following topics: 
ELAWe will learn about complete sentences, comparing and contrasting, and using a glossary. We will focus on spelling words with short vowels o, u, and e. We are still reading The Twits by Roald Dahl. We should finish up by Monday or Tuesday and start The Magic Finger next week!  

Math: The new topics we'll introduce this week are: writing numbers to 100, addition fact doubles to 18, identifying attributes of pattern blocks, ordinal position, and repeating patterns. 

Social Studies: We will continue our unit on citizenship and communities. This week we will review urban, suburban, and rural communities, compare long ago vs. today, talk about what a citizen looks like in the community/classroom, and introduce how to interview someone.  

Did You Know? Germany is our sister country in 2nd grade. Our first project will be dealing with Germany...look for more information to come home!
