Weekly Update - October 26th

Happy Last Pink Friday! 

Next week we will be working on the following topics: 
ELA: This week we are going to take another break from Journeys due to the short week. Instead, we will read Flat Stanley and work on extension activities connected to the book. This includes sending our Flat Stanley characters all over the world! Please look for information to come home on Monday. We will also finish our Roald Dahl book, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, that ties right into our science unit on matter.   

Math: We will continue spiraling through our Saxon math, focusing specifically on counting dimes and pennies, writing addition and subtraction fact families, drawing pictures to solve problems, and looking for patterns to solve problems. We will also take an assessment.       

Science: We will finish up our matter unit, reviewing and preparing for our unit test on Thursday.

  • Character Parade - Tuesday, October 30th - Students may dress up as their favorite story book character. Cost is $1. Students MUST have the book their character is from with them at school for the parade.

  • MAP Testing [Reading] - Wednesday, October 31st - Please make sure your child is in school this day. The data from these tests helps drive our instruction and determines which students receive tutoring throughout the week.

Weekly Update - October 19th

Happy Pink Friday! Rocket Ryan is visiting us today! 

Next week we will be working on the following topics: 
ELA: This week we begin our 7th lesson in Journeys, focusing on drawing conclusions and analyzing/evaluating. We will work on proper nouns and homophones. This week our phonics focus will be on double consonants and /ck/. We will also continue our Roald Dahl book, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, that ties right into our science unit on matter.   

Math: We will continue spiraling through our Saxon math, focusing specifically on attributes, time to the half hour, estimating temperature, and reading a thermometer. We will also take an assessment this week.     

Science: We will continue in our matter unit, focusing on physical and chemical changes. Friday we hope to have an awesome last day of experiments!!

Weekly Update - October 12th

Happy International Festival and 1/2 Day Friday!! 

Next week we will be working on the following topics: 
ELA: This week we begin our 6th lesson in Journeys, focusing on text features and thick questions. We will work on plural nouns some more along with base words and prefixes (un- and re-). This week our phonics focus will be on final consonant blends (nd, ng, nk, nt, ft, xt, mp). We will also continue our Roald Dahl book, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, that ties right into our science unit on matter.   

Math: We will continue spiraling through our Saxon math, focusing specifically on identifying and sorting shapes by attribute, drawing pictures and writing numbers for some some more and some some went away story problems, dividing shapes in 1/2 and identifying whether the fractional shape is closest to 0, 1/2, or 1, and dividing a square in 1/2 two different ways.    

Science: We will continue in our matter unit, focusing on changing states of matter, evaporation, and condensation.

  • Library - Books were due yesterday (10/11) and will be charged a 25 cent late fee for each day they are not returned. Our next visit to the library will be 10/25.
  • Picture Make Up Day - Wednesday, October 17th - Students must be in white logo polo.
  • Fall Celebration - Friday, October 26th at 1:45 p.m. - This is a great opportunity to meet other parents and students from the class. We need parent helpers to provide and assist with crafts for the kids as well as to provide refreshments for the special party. Crafts should be centered around a Fall theme - leaves, pumpkins, etc. We need 3 parents to come up with craft ideas and supply the materials needed for the 24 students in class. We also need parents to sign up for refreshments: juice boxes, snacks, plates, napkins. These parents could send items in with the child or bring them in and be extra hands to help with the crafts. Please contact Sharon Hinesley, our coordinator, at shhinesley@gmail.com if you are able to help out in any way. If you are unable to help this time, there will be several other opportunities.

BASP: Behavior - Students are held to the same standards and expectations at CIS. Students need to follow all rules and our Four Core Values. Students can be removed and asked to leave before or after school if there are repeated issues.  


Student Council: We raised $180.00 for Buddy Walk. Thank you for helping!


PTSO News: 
Uniform Swap: If you need to swap out your child's uniform for a bigger or smaller size, you can do this at the International Festival.


Lost and Found: Please check the lost and found in the office for your child's missing uniform items. Please label all of their clothing. Go to PTSO Facebook page to look for all lost items.

Next week we will be working on the following topics: 
ELAThis week we are taking a break from our Journeys unit and focusing strictly on Germany. We will complete a KWHL chart on Germany, learn about the flag, decorate our Germany suitcases, learn to count to 10 in German, participate in some German Readers Theaters (plays), learn about Oktoberfest, and more! Then Thursday we will have our big OKTOBERFEST CELEBRATION! Students should wear their traditional German outfits Thursday. We will also begin our new Roald Dahl book, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, that ties right into our science unit on matter.   

Math: We will continue spiraling through our Saxon math, focusing specifically on identifying polygons, fractions, adding 9 and adding 10, using logical reasoning and acting to solve problems, and creating color patterns.    

Science: We will continue in our matter unit, focusing on solutions/mixtures, changing states of matter, and gases. 


International: It's GERMAN WEEK!

Afternoon Check-out:  Parents will not be able to check out their child after 3:00 on regular school days (8:30-3:30) and on half days (8:30-12:00) checking out before 12 will constitute in missing a full day of school.  See Handbook page 24.

Future for Schools: Here are 21 things that will be obsolete in schools by 2020.If you have time, this is a very interesting article. CIS is on the cutting edge and has implemented many educational opportunities for our students. We will continue to stay ahead and prepare them for the future. Thank you for your support!
