Weekly Update - October 12th

Happy International Festival and 1/2 Day Friday!!

Next week we will be working on the following topics:
ELA: This week we begin our 6th lesson in Journeys, focusing on text features and thick questions. We will work on plural nouns some more along with base words and prefixes (un- and re-). This week our phonics focus will be on final consonant blends (nd, ng, nk, nt, ft, xt, mp). We will also continue our Roald Dahl book, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, that ties right into our science unit on matter.

Math: We will continue spiraling through our Saxon math, focusing specifically on identifying and sorting shapes by attribute, drawing pictures and writing numbers for some some more and some some went away story problems, dividing shapes in 1/2 and identifying whether the fractional shape is closest to 0, 1/2, or 1, and dividing a square in 1/2 two different ways.

Science: We will continue in our matter unit, focusing on changing states of matter, evaporation, and condensation.

Friend of the Week: Our F.O.W. this week is Sean Bittle

Reminders/F.Y.I

  • Friday, October 12th - Early Dismissal 12 p.m.
  • Friday, October 12th - International Festival 4-8 p.m.
  • P.E. days next week are Monday, Wednesday, and Friday! (A complete schedule for A/B days can be found in the student/parent handbook on page 9)
  • Pink Fridays - For the month of October, in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness, students can wear pink shirts with uniform pants on Fridays.
  • Library - Books were due yesterday (10/11) and will be charged a 25 cent late fee for each day they are not returned. Our next visit to the library will be 10/25.
  • Picture Make Up Day - Wednesday, October 17th - Students must be in white logo polo.
  • Fall Celebration - Friday, October 26th at 1:45 p.m. - This is a great opportunity to meet other parents and students from the class. We need parent helpers to provide and assist with crafts for the kids as well as to provide refreshments for the special party. Crafts should be centered around a Fall theme - leaves, pumpkins, etc. We need 3 parents to come up with craft ideas and supply the materials needed for the 24 students in class. We also need parents to sign up for refreshments: juice boxes, snacks, plates, napkins. These parents could send items in with the child or bring them in and be extra hands to help with the crafts. Please contact Sharon Hinesley, our coordinator, at shhinesley@gmail.com if you are able to help out in any way. If you are unable to help this time, there will be several other opportunities.
  • Mrs. Wilhelm needs someone to fill in for her November 7th Mystery Reader slot - if you are willing/able please go to the following link and enter your name. Thanks! https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AlWG7l4g_Hk6dC1tQXhjNGY4aFlKdnYtclNWV1Jhb3c#gid=0
